Advisory Board
The RI3K Advisory Board was founded in September 2008 with a role to provide the RI3K Management with guidance around policy, pricing, and market relations.
Tim Carroll
A native of Dublin, Tim Carroll joined Swiss Re in June 2006 following its acquisition of the GE Insurance Solutions global reinsurance business, taking responsibility for the UK, Ireland and Africa. At GE he was European Business Leader responsible for all Property and Liability business written in the European operations. He was CEO of GE Reinsurance Corporation in Chicago between 2002 and 2004.
Tim served as Chairman of the International Underwriting Association of London from January 1999 through July 2001. He was President of the Insurance Institute of London in 2001/2002. He rejoined the IUA Board in 2006 and was appointed to the London Market Reform Group Board in 2007. In 2008, the Chartered Insurance Institute awarded him its medal for distinguished service.
Tim holds an Economics degree from University College Dublin and an MBA degree from University College Galway. He is also a Fellow of the Chartered Insurance Institute.
Ian Summers
Ian has worked for Aon for over 20 years. Starting his career in the claims department of Alexander Howden, he performed a number of operational roles before becoming the Managing Director of Reinsurance Operations.
Following on from this, he then spent 18 months in Aon’s Technology Divisions helping to develop Aon’s “Aon Broking Connections” Client and Market applications.
He is an active participant in many of the Markets Reform Programmes and in his current role of Managing Director – eBusiness and Market Reform his primary focus is to enhance procedures, both within the Aon Network and in the market to constantly improve the service to Aon’s Clients.
Paul Jardine
Paul Jardine joined Prudential Assurance Company Limited as an actuarial student and subsequently an actuary.
Paul moved to Coopers & Lybrand in 1987 as a manager in the Actuarial Insurance Services group. He was appointed a partner in 1993. During his nine years with Coopers & Lybrand he was involved almost exclusively with issues dealing with Lloyd’s and the London Insurance market.
Paul joined Equitas in 1996 as chief actuary, and he was elected to the Equitas Board in February 1999 and appointed to the additional post of commutations director.
In 2001 he joined the Catlin Group with specific responsibility for the development of new financial products. He was appointed chief operating officer of the Catlin Group in February 2004 and a deputy chairman of Catlin Underwriting Agencies Limited in December 2007.
Alex Letts
After graduating from Oxford, Alex spent 15 years working in the international advertising sector. SMI Group which he founded in 1988 went on to become the largest business advertising agency in Europe, specialising in technology clients and pioneering web-based communications. SMI was bought by Groupe Publicis in 1997 where Alex served as Worldwide President and CEO of Publicis Technology.
Alex founded RI3K in May 2000 to build an electronic trading exchange for the insurance sector. In May 2007 a consortium led by Michael Spencer of ICAP and the hedge fund Eton Park took majority control of RI3K. RI3K employs about 70 staff and has a network of more than 270 companies trading on its service.
Alex is married with four children and lives in London.
Nicholas Michaelides
Nicholas is responsible for the design and implementation of the reinsurance strategy for AOG. This involves the management of outwards reinsurance, including developing effective relationships with ACE’s reinsurance panel and reinsurance intermediaries. He is actively involved in the major placements while providing direction and guidance across the spectrum of all the treaties placed by AOG.
Nicholas came to ACE from the Aviva Group in 2002, where he served as Group Reinsurance Director. It was in this role, that he first made use of the RI3K platform, and has been encouraging its use ever since, especially as the various iterations have brought improvements in functionality and usability.
Nicholas is a graduate of the London School of Economics and a Fellow of the Chartered Insurance Institute.
Robin Merttens
Since graduating with a Law Degree from St Catherine’s College Cambridge, Robin has spent the majority of his career working in the insurance industry. As Group Solicitor at Lowndes Lambert, he held a key role in the MBO and subsequent IPO, and later worked on the £250m MBO of Heath Lambert. When he left Heath Lambert in May 2000 to help found RI3K, he was Managing Director of Heath Lambert Overseas.
Robin was one of the original founders of RI3K in May 2000, and since that time, as the company’s Chief Operating Officer, he has sat on the Board and Executive Committee.
His responsibility at RI3K is to ensure that all aspects of the company co-ordinate effectively to support the needs of the customers and the market in terms of quality of service and in design and development of RI3K’s offering.
